In previous Heroes games, it was simple, but I can't figure it out in this one.
In Skirmish mode, there's only one human player.
In "One Computer" mode, I can't add an AI.

You need Hotseat mode. Select "Multiplayer," and at the bottom, you'll find an icon with a chair. Choose a map for four players, and add one more human player and one more AI opponent, in addition to the player already present. Play! To play as each faction, you need to create a dynasty of heroes for each faction in your profile. Your friend will need another hero if you plan to play as the same faction.

And why should that bother you? It will be much harder for you to find each other in the game, but playing will be the same as with any other players :).
