There is a fairly simple way to make saves during a battle. I'm sure someone uses it, but I haven't read about it anywhere.
1. You need to install a virtual machine on your computer.
2. Install Windows on it.
3. Install Heroes.
4. Launch Heroes (or any program, any game).
5. Play and reach the point where you need to save (for example, when a stack's morale drops).
6. Save the current state of the virtual machine.
7. That's it. Now, if you need to restore, you can simply choose a restore point.

Using this method, you can significantly reduce the time spent on generating battles.
