Having crossed the threshold of her new home, where she was to spend the next two years of her life, Varya discovers that she is not alone in the cozy little room. Apparently, she was preoccupied with some intense thoughts, and therefore did not immediately notice her roommate. But when she saw her, she was immediately frightened, stepped back, and fell onto the bed.
As the daughter of a Sakumorian fleet officer, Lionel Squill, Leila saw her father less often than she would have liked. Being a strict and responsible man in his own right, after the death of her mother, Leila's father devoted all his efforts not only to safeguarding the life of the dearest person remaining in his life, but also to ensuring her financial stability. The rare moments father and daughter spent together were dedicated to training. This was due not only to the habits Lionel had developed over years of service, but also to the fact that he, being by nature a man of few words, could not find suitable topics for conversation with his daughter. Leila herself was glad even for this kind of pastime, which required no extra words. At times, the old soldier worried that his daughter might choose a similar path in life, but in the end he decided that knowing how to defend herself would not hurt her. Especially in case something ever happened to him.
Most of her time free from studies and daily chores, Leila spent either with books or training with her peers. Partly because it had already become a habit for her, but partly also to impress her father with her progress during one of his infrequent visits. Occasionally, however, the girl allowed herself small escapades, sneaking with other curious pairs of eyes into casinos or other places where they were not supposed to be. Perhaps due to luck, or perhaps due to the lenient attitude toward inquisitive youngsters, such adventures usually ended without any serious consequences. Sometimes Leila even worked part-time as a tour guide for tourists, though this was motivated more by her interest in guests from distant lands than by a search for personal gain.
The idea of trying her luck at admission to NAILS came to Leila around the same time it did to her father. After all, for Lionel it meant a guarantee not only of his daughter's safety in the elite academy, but also of a bright future. Ideally, a bright future somewhere quiet and safe. Leila, for her part, saw it as an opportunity to simultaneously satisfy her thirst for knowledge and delight her father with her future successes.

Apparently, she was preoccupied with some intense thoughts, and therefore didn't immediately pay attention to her neighbor. But when she did notice her, she was immediately frightened, stepped back, and fell onto the bed.
Varya watched the scene with eyes full of silent surprise. -- Hello... Um, do you mind if we're neighbors? -- the refitter extended a hand to the fallen girl, either to help her get up or to say hello. -- I'm Varya.
— Ah... Yes, I mean, no... I mean, no, I don't mind. Sorry, I just thought a man walked into a women's dormitory, so I got a little flustered. Oh... — Realizing what she had just said, the girl quickly apologized. — Sorry, I didn't mean anything by that...
"Why are you suddenly so formal? Does she think I'm older?" -- It's okay, I apologize for sneaking up on you, -- Varya smiled, raising her hands in a conciliatory gesture. -- Well, then I'll start getting settled.
-- It's so nice to meet you, Yuk-ka! I'm glad we'll be studying together. It's great that we both got in! "Otherwise, who knows, maybe I'd end up rooming with some snob or a bore." Varya starts unpacking her modest belongings, and among them, she pulls out a bear the size of a ten-year-old child, worn, missing an ear, but still cute, with button-like eyes. She places it on the bed. -- Have you been here long?
— No, not really, just a little while before... you. I'm still worried about whether I passed the exam. The questions in the last section were very unusual.
-- Yes... There were a lot of strange questions. I hope they aren't preparing us to wander through the desert or tame evil wizard mayors. -- Although some of the questions were okay... -- And I didn't do very well on the practical part... *Sighs deeply*

— I'm more interested in what happened to the guards' killers... I hope they aren't walking among us now. Although, what am I talking about, the described situation is most likely fictional, ha... ha...
Varya finished unpacking and lay down on the bed, looking at the ceiling.
"Anyway, I'm used to it; I wasn't considered a diligent student even before. The main thing is that we're here."
