Eh, well, it's not quite defined that way; everything is subjective for everyone. In short, for a beginner there are about a dozen titles you can check out (by choosing an interesting genre) and only then draw a conclusion as to whether it's worth continuing; like, say, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, Hellsing, Berserk, Naruto, etc. Basically, things you might have heard of even without getting into the subject.

Should you start watching anime or not?

I don't understand why Japanese animation should be ignored, or, conversely, why one should deliberately focus on it.
The more genres or options you consider, the better; it broadens your horizons and gives you more to choose from.
If you want something philosophical, Nebok, check out "Kino no Tabi." I always praise it.
If you want something philosophical with a touch of absurdity, then "Spirited Away" might be a good option. Well, if you haven't seen it yet.
In general, I'm not an anime expert, but I can name a few works that I like.

That's a phase I've already gone through. I started getting into all this around your age, and then I lost interest. Maybe I'll pick it up again someday.

An excellent way to commit suicide is to go to Donbas and kill separatists and Russians, and then die from shelling or torture in captivity. But for now, I don't really feel like it.

Nebok, I think you might enjoy one of these titles: Kuuchuu Buranko, Yojōhan Shinwa Taikei, or Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. The first one is good if you want something a bit more… unconventional (but still good), the second one if you want something more about everyday life (again, good), and the third one if you want something with a comedic slant (and about despair). All three titles are good, and I personally like them; they’re among my favorites. You could also try Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji, but I don’t know how you feel about series about gambling. And yes, there’s a lot of despair there too. And it’s also one of my favorite series. I’d rate it a 10/10, especially since it’s one of the best works in its genre. It’s just a shame that only the first two arcs were adapted into an anime.
