Could you please be more specific with your question? Are you referring to a local network or the internet?

As far as I remember, this feature wasn't available in the initial release of Heroes of Might and Magic IV, and I think it was only present in pirated versions, while the licensed version didn't have it.

However, even in the pirated version of The Shadow of Death, there was an option for online play.

As for the expansion pack, I'm not aware of any such thing.

Everything needed for online play is available on the licensed game discs – each one contains it.

To play online, you need:
1) At least version 3.0 "WoW".
2) An opponent who also wants to play online.
3) A way to connect with the opponent.

The second point is also not difficult. Your opponent must have the exact same version as you.
However, the third point is often where problems arise. The main one is that neither you nor your opponent has an external IP address. A way to solve this problem is to download Hamachi from http://files.hamachi.cc/HamachiSetup-0.9.9.9-ru.exe. Both players should install this program and join the same network. One of the players creates a game and selects a map, and the second player uses the opponent's IP address to connect directly.
If you have an external address, you don't need to install Hamachi; you can connect directly via IP, but you need to find out the IP address of your opponent beforehand. You can also play through Gamespy; the program eliminates the need to enter 12-digit addresses and connects you automatically.

P.S. You can easily see the IP address in the lower corner when the server has already selected a map.

How can I play Heroes over the network?

Please help me set up Heroes of Might and Magic 4, Russian version 1.0, for network play. When I click on "Network," a message appears saying, "This option will be available soon. Please use the update utility." I downloaded the patch (h4chreg10to20.exe) from the BUKI website. When I run it, it requires the Russian version of Heroes of Might and Magic 4 from BUKI to be installed. I've tried it on two computers, but it doesn't work. Install the "Whirlwinds of War" add-on, but keep in mind that it can only be installed on a licensed version of Heroes 4! It has already been patched to version 3.0. You can play "Whirlwinds" online without any issues! And that's what we're doing :)

You can check if you have a licensed copy in the following way: the disc should be sealed when you buy it. In Russia, Heroes is published by the company Buka! And finally: the game won't launch without entering a key :) It's protected by StarForce :) This is probably the most important difference from a pirated copy ;)
