The mage grabbed the bandit by the throat and pressed a dagger against him.
"We have a hostage!" he shouted. "Surrender, or we'll kill everyone!"
"Surround the building," Feanor whispered to the constables. "If you see a goblin, ignore the others and focus on him."

I've already forgotten which one. Unfortunately, Feanor's splash attack couldn't reach the goblin at that distance, and the captured bandit, taking advantage of the confusion, ran away in another direction. However, they and the gendarme had a chance to catch Udi-Lar: he ran into an alley, from which there probably was no exit.
They rushed in after them and... saw nothing, only a bare wall between two houses standing close together. The wall was too high to climb over, and this was clear to Feanor and the gendarme without any further thought.
“It’s as if he vanished into thin air,” Feanor whispered. “Perhaps there’s a secret door here, or a hidden passage, or…” The mage began randomly pushing against the walls of the houses, trying to find and lift a paving stone, and finally, he tried to climb onto the roof.
