I've come to the conclusion that a good mood is similar to the effects of alcohol or drugs - after a few days or (worse) weeks of being in a cheerful state, when you return to a "normal" mood, you inevitably sink into a more depressive state than you were in before.
The same thing happens with a bad mood. If a day (or sometimes several in a row) is super-mega terrible and leaves you with nothing but negativity and emotional exhaustion, then most often the next day brings a ton of positive emotions and it seems that the darkness has receded. And then everything returns to normal. I think this effect is related to the fact that I know how to appreciate the little things and especially value them after difficult trials.
