Solar eclipses are frequently mentioned in ancient sources. An even greater number of dated descriptions can be found in Western European medieval chronicles and annals. For example, a solar eclipse is mentioned in the Annals of Saint Maximinus of Trier: “In 538, on February 16, a solar eclipse occurred from the first to the third hour”[4]. A large number of descriptions of solar eclipses from ancient times can also be found in the chronicles of East Asia, primarily in the Dynastic Histories of China, in Arabic chronicles, and in Russian chronicles.
