250 experience points + doubling of two useful stats (or freeing up stat points to be allocated elsewhere, which is also very useful) + a decent bonus for a melee unit (and possibly for ranged units as well, I'm not sure if it works on bows and crossbows). Kalevrites are very good in terms of bonuses.
