For me, it was the opposite. In the first week, the AI beat up my archers, and I retreated to the Castle. I had to spend a week idling under the confluence. Then there was a constant loss of tempo and a race in hopes of catching up to the opponent in strength. By the 2nd week, I was even stronger in terms of stats, but then a huge treasure zone, scattered Pandoras, and the only Dragon Utopia with 5 black cats cut my army down significantly; it didn't give me Town Portal, but instead stuffed me with a cap, an air book, and a fire book. All in all, things just didn't work out.
