Online tournament: The best hero.

I have a question: I attack a Castle with a hero, and I bring the battle to the point where the enemy's army only has a summoned elemental left, and then I retreat! Should the enemy hero have disappeared because he didn't have his own army? And if so, can he be hired again later?
