If it doesn't work on version 3.2, then in this case, it would have made sense to play on an unpatched version.

That wouldn't have worked. Because if it's not patched in the earlier versions, then the participants aren't on equal footing, which is why it wouldn't have worked.
So, it's a bug – well, at least they patched it.
I have version 3.2, and I don't have versions 3.0 and 3.1, therefore, I'm at a disadvantage.
