It's interesting how to even catch someone like that?

I'm not a real hacker, but maybe:

editing the game's save file, which obviously isn't detected at the time of loading (checksum verification for both opponents)

The cheater must save the game, hack the file, and then continue the game by loading the hacked version.

Or, editing the memory directly - but that would require a comment from an expert.
