Is diplomacy necessary?

In reality, all these claims like "I recruited 500 minotaurs!", "I recruited 200 titans!", "I recruited 100,000,000 azure dragons!" don't seem very convincing. I don't know what constants are used in random maps, where half a thousand monsters grow in 4 months and are eager to join, but in campaigns and scenarios, diplomacy is a completely useless skill.
