The term "lamentations" (plural) refers to musical compositions based on the Lamentations of Jeremiah from the 16th to the 21st centuries.

In the Jewish canon, the Book of Lamentations is usually found in the section of Hagiographa, or Writings, which also includes the books Song of Songs, Ruth, Ecclesiastes, and Esther—five scrolls collected under the general title Megillot (Scrolls).
