Am I understanding correctly that the free slots are already assigned, and the player in the top pair doesn't need to play any games? They only need to play in the bottom pair for a spot in the next round, or will players be assigned later?

The top pair plays against the winner of the bottom pair. If they lose, they play against the loser of the bottom pair. If they lose again, they are eliminated. If the top pair wins against the winner of the bottom pair, does the bottom pair play another game? Is that how it works?
