Protect - similarly.
Between doubling and protecting - let the cook choose for himself; both are viable options. Since the mafia doesn't want to clear anyone by block, they might as well kill with Hunger, which makes Flavius useless and the cook extremely necessary.
If the mafia players want to cut someone out of the suspicious ones, they will only narrow the circle on themselves, so that won't happen.
