Indeed... auto-battles and regular battles are not the cause of the computer freezing... try reinstalling the game or installing it from a licensed disc...
Regarding the version... you can check it in the properties of the main file (in the Heroes folder, the game launch file)... or by using this information: The Restoration of Erathia is 3.0; Armageddon's Blade is 3.1; The Shadow of Death is 3.2; Platinum Collection is 4.0....
