I was taking my time gathering resources and recruiting troops in the dwellings. The main thing is not to clear out the neutral creatures standing in the way of the elephant too early. And when it moved north, I calmly crossed to the other side. Along the way, I even managed to visit a Fortress.

Also, in version 1.5, the elephant crosses to the other side and stands there for a while. You can ignore it and gather resources on the other side. But in this case, you can't stay in the castle for even one turn. Build a guild of level 1 and run.
