Hmm… Good question. I’ll say that I’ve sent letters to nicknames, and they reached the recipients. From Ukraine to Russia, by the way. And sometimes they didn’t reach, even with real names. For example, from Crimea to Moscow in 2014.
A real name is probably needed when sending money or in other special cases.
