In short, men have a dominant Y chromosome, while women have an X chromosome.

Correction: in men, it doesn't dominate, but is simply present. A sperm cell carries either an X chromosome or a Y chromosome, while an egg cell always has only an X chromosome. Consequently, the resulting zygote has a set of chromosomes that is either XX (girl) or XY (boy).
By the way, since only the X chromosome carries a complete set of genes, it is more logical from a medical point of view that inheritance occurs along the female line: a girl carries more inherited traits.:smile42:
