I ran around for a long time without control and eventually lost, but I had magic and an army.
I managed to catch a red hero replenishing mana in a town by scouting the area. I saw his stats and was shocked; before that, the opponent hadn't revealed his stats at all. If it had been a day later, I would have lost the game.
