Offensive spells, like machines, become less effective over time (unless you're a dark elf, of course), so I think it's best to develop a mage either into a defensive build with buffs or into a build focused on swift attacks (which is unlikely to be effective against, say, orcs with Bloodlust) with many debuffs.
