A THREAD FOR NEWCOMERS!

Try opening the maps with the Heroes map editor.

I wasn't being silly, that's what I was doing. But I figured it out; it seems the game itself was corrupted somewhere. I re-downloaded it, and now everything is fine.

Maybe someone else can suggest which template is best for a newbie to learn with?
