I believe that on XL+U you can often just mess around and still win, because you have a Dragon Utopia with control right next to you, and even if you take it 2 days later than ideal, it often works out.

Anything can happen. The question is the percentage of such scenarios. On XL+U, one-sided layouts are significantly less common than on smaller templates. It's actually surprising that someone would argue with this obvious fact.
