An Olympic-style tournament is certainly possible – but only in theory. Because we can’t limit the number of participants to just 16. And if the bracket is for 32, then what – 11 free slots in the first round? Those who can come, always do – and refusing someone who wants to play is bad manners and makes no sense. How do you distribute quotas for participation – based on what principle? It’s not an option. It’s an Open Championship.
And I’ll repeat once more – this isn’t about saying that the Swiss system, in the form it has been for all these years, doesn’t work. It’s just that we ended up with one of the most awkward odd numbers of participants.
What else can we come up with? Well, let’s draw the second round like the first, with the full pool of participants regardless of the results of the first round, and redraw if there’s a repeat opponent...
