Explain to a noob why Tower is a weak castle. Record-breaking starting firepower, the strongest level 6 unit, perks like Mages and Master Genies. Is it only because of the lack of starting heroes and difficulties taking cons not on native terrain?

Tower has an excellent troop lineup, but the whole problem is that the main gremlin stack is absolutely useless in Dragon Fly Hives/Dragon Utopias, as well as in fights against shooters. Therefore, to take Dragon Utopias (which often decide the entire game), you need to farm up a sufficient number of Angels somewhere, which requires more time. On small maps, where early contact often happens, gremlins combined with mage heroes perform very well.
