First, things were bad—clerics weren't leveling up—but on week 2 a necromancer arrived, followed by a diplomat. On week 3, the join phase started (just like in a normal game with roads, as it happens), but then the opponent shows up with the Cloak of the Undead King. I snatch 2 ГО right from under his nose, and with 4 ДД I reveal the map; after a while, a Town Portal scroll turned up, both cartographers, and in the only Black Market right under the opponent's nose I found the missing artifact for the Cloak of the Undead King—within a week we were equal on liches, gg. The opponent had virtually no control + terrible leveling. TFP.
