Kir used to own a small business in one of the cities of Ilinar. They mainly dealt with buying and selling magical items, scrolls, and other valuables. The activity was not entirely legal, especially since some of the goods were bought from individuals of criminal appearance who simply could not afford to own such curiosities. But Kir wasn't particularly concerned about this, as they weren't the only ones engaged in such a trade, and worse things happened in the city, so the city guard didn't press them too hard. The staff consisted of about ten people. Some were tasked with finding buyers, some maintained contact with suppliers, there were, of course, guards, and Kir personally handled all monetary operations and storage of goods. It wasn't that the Darnian didn't trust his employees, but he felt more at peace this way, and he also loved to look at the magical trinkets brought to him. Thus, during the existence of his business, he saw many interesting items, a couple of which he kept for himself.
As for the legality of the activity itself, it is difficult to categorize Kir as the type of person who didn't care about law and order. Rather, circumstances aligned that pushed him toward one of the fastest and least dangerous ways of earning money. The thing was, he really liked a Darnian woman named Taya, but she categorically refused to be with a man who had nothing to his name, so Kir decided to fix this. Besides, he always enjoyed feeling like a successful person, whether it was studying magic or something else; in general, he always strove for something greater, new and unknown. Perhaps for this reason, he decided to join the followers of Rosario. In financial and business terms, Kir was not afraid to take risks; he didn't cling to what he had, believing that he could always earn it again. But in other respects, he was cautious and thought his steps ahead, perfectly understanding that there are more valuable things in life that cannot be regained if lost.
Time passed and soon the activity bore fruit. Kir could finally afford many things. He gave Taya expensive gifts, took her to the best establishments in the city, and gave her much attention. The girl could no longer resist and returned the Darnian's feelings. One might think that Taya was a mercenary and greedy woman, driven only by the desire to profit from others' property and be part of the world of rich, successful people, existing in an atmosphere of luxury and prosperity. However, it wasn't that simple; she rather wanted to feel protected and secure, including materially. She believed that one cannot build a serious relationship with a person who cannot be a support for her, who has no home, no permanent job, and does not think about the future. Now everything had changed—at least most of this list—meaning the rest was not far off. Kir was undoubtedly happy with the outcome of his efforts and, having achieved success once again, decided to move forward, planning to expand his business, the details of which he never shared with his beloved.
One day while walking through the city, Kir and Taya witnessed a boy being beaten by older boys. From the poor fellow's appearance, the Darnian immediately guessed that he was homeless. The couple looked at each other and realized they needed to intervene. After driving away the bullies, they helped the youth up. Noticing that the boy was bleeding, Taya suggested he come to their home to treat his wounds, as well as eat and change clothes. After some persuasion, he agreed. The youth introduced himself as Damien and said that other boys often picked on him because he lived on the street and had no one. The Darnian woman felt sorry for the boy and when she was alone with Kir while their guest was changing, she asked her beloved to hire the youth. Realizing that a refusal would cause unnecessary questions, Kir agreed, although he didn't understand what work could be given to a twelve-year-old boy, considering what they did. Over time, all these questions vanished and young Damien began performing duties as a messenger, and sometimes other small errands. He spent his free time with Kir, listening carefully to everything he said and taught. He was grateful to the Darnian and respected him, for he had helped him, given him a job, and most importantly, treated the boy with kindness and spoke to him as an equal, rather than looking down on him like everyone else he had met before. As for Kir, over time he also became attached to the lad, which slightly surprised him. Interacting with children was foreign to him, except for his own childhood when he himself was a child. The Darnian was far from all that—from all those parental cares and duties; it was even hard for him to imagine that he might one day become a father himself, however, this lad unlocked previously hidden qualities in Kir.
After some time, Kir's organization increased its influence on the city's shadow market and even beyond, covering nearby towns. But of course, not everyone liked this; problems began with competing groups, including legal traders, among whom were wizards. The local authorities were also not particularly pleased by this fact, but they could at least be negotiated with, unlike the others. Difficult times required changes, especially in terms of protecting the business and firm employees. The first warning bell rang when several brutes blocked Kir and his two guards on one of the streets. Back then, they got off with light bruises and scratches, mainly thanks to the Darnian's magical art, but he didn't want to risk more. Additional people were hired for protection, among whom there were not only warriors. Kir also did not skimp on weaponry and tried to select better equipment. Unfortunately, this did not help. One evening, when it had long since grown dark outside and most citizens had dispersed to their homes, the trading base was attacked by unknown people dressed all in black. At this late hour, Kir was at his workplace, and with him were Damien and several other people, including guards. Some were killed instantly, caught off guard; others managed to draw weapons and enter the fight. The Darnian immediately rushed to his comrades and began striking enemies with bolts of lightning. The young Ilinarian was nearby at the time, trying not to stray far from Kir. In his hand he held a dagger, having pulled it from the belt of a dead guard. When the attackers dispersed, the Darnian gave the survivors the command to inspect the building for valuables. As expected, some items were stolen, however, the criminals did not take everything. Then Kir hurried home, but before that, he ordered the remaining property to be moved to a safe place and warned other employees who were at home during the attack about the danger. Reaching his dwelling, the Darnian immediately suspected something was wrong. No lights were burning in the windows, and it was too quiet outside. Taking down the hanging lantern by the porch, Kir opened the door and entered. Things were scattered throughout the house; it felt as if uninvited guests had been searching for something. But this didn't worry him; the Darnian was worried about his beloved. The building was silent, not a single sound. He called Taya, but no one answered. After inspecting the house, Kir became convinced she was gone. His thoughts began to tangle; he fell into confusion and did not know what to do. Suddenly, something bright flew through the window and fell on the floor, after which a flame flared up. Realizing what was happening, the Darnian rushed outside. Finding himself in the yard, he looked around and saw a dark figure running toward the temple quarter. Kir followed the fugitive, ran several streets, but eventually lost the arsonist's trail. Realizing that he could no longer do anything today, the Darnian went to the secret place where his comrades were supposed to move the remaining valuables. The next day he gathered all employees and they began discussing the attack. There were several versions, but Kir was troubled by the fact that this was not just an attack on their warehouse for robbery and possible intimidation, but an attack involving the killing of people and the kidnapping of a person. Although there were many doubts about the latter. Was it a kidnapping? If so, is Taya still alive or not? Kir contacted the city guard regarding the disappearance of his beloved; they accepted the report, but treated the case clearly without seriousness and did not hurry with the search, either due to being busy, or because of a dismissive attitude and laziness, or for other reasons. Meanwhile, it was necessary to check all enemies and competitors, starting from the city authorities and ending with ordinary bandits. The latter option was, of course, considered just for formality's sake, as the attackers were well-armed and prepared. The first few days yielded no results, which seemed quite strange. Then even more mysterious events began to occur. In two days, several people working for Kir disappeared. He realized that his enemies had caught wind of him trying to track them down and decided to hinder this. Being a responsible leader, he decided to dismiss the remaining people, dividing among them the surviving valuables and monetary savings. The Darnian advised them to leave the city, at least for a while, and wished everyone luck. But he himself decided to stay, and with him Damien, who simply had nowhere else to go. Kir first wanted to part ways with his young friend due to the looming threat, but the latter flatly refused to leave. Perhaps it really was better that way, despite the situation. It was dangerous for the boy both with him and alone. Alas, further searches yielded nothing. A feeling arose that the Darnian could spend the rest of his life searching for answers, and it is unknown how long this would have continued if he had not encountered people in black again one day. This time there were only two of them and they appeared suddenly, emerging from around a corner while Kir and Damien were strolling through the city. One of the strangers grabbed the lad, holding a knife to his throat. The second began to advance threateningly, muttering something under his breath. The Darnian realized he could not hesitate and with a quick movement of his hand directed an electric discharge toward the brute holding the boy. He instantly fell into a stupor, which allowed Damien to break free from the tight grip. Turning toward his partner, the first brute lost the advantage, which Kir certainly took advantage of by hitting the opponent on the head with his cane, causing him to stagger and then collapse to the ground. Grabbing the youth by the hand, the Darnian hurried away. He realized they could no longer stay in the city. While he wasn't particularly worried about himself, he was very worried about his protégé.
Over several years, they visited many cities; Kir began teaching Damien magic. They decided to start with the element of earth; the boy chose it himself. Then they planned to begin training in charms of the air school. For this, the Darnian bought special books and scrolls, and searched for mages capable of teaching everything necessary. Besides this, the young Ilinarian was good at navigating terrain, quickly learned local rumors, found the right establishments and the right people while remaining inconspicuous, and if needed, could open almost any lock. With each passing day, the past troubled them less, but they never forgot it. Kir believed that someday he would find out who stood behind this crime and learn what happened to Taya.
