Roman women didn't have surnames; instead, their personal name was replaced with a family name. Although, this is quite similar to a surname.
I can't say for sure about barbarian women, but they enjoyed a significant degree of freedom. So, they might have had surnames, and these surnames could have been different from their husbands' surnames.
