I agree with Loken; I also attended those conferences. Everything was exactly as described, but it was even worse for mages who didn't have combat spells. Not only did they lack combat skills because it was expensive, but they also didn't have any combat spells, and the spells they did have could fail more than half the time (based on my experience).
