From my perspective, it seems that less than 1% of believers actually read the Bible or the Quran.

As for various forms of Orthodoxy (including Greek Catholics), yes, that's true. They tend to value "Lives of the Saints" and other works by the Church Fathers more.
However, most Protestants are capable of quoting the Bible, almost from memory. Mainly the New Testament.
