In the Town Screen, I also spent a lot of time with vampires, but I didn't get to fully utilize them because I was playing as a mage, and the large enemy units were already quite weakened when they engaged the vampires in combat. It was difficult with the elves; they all have an unreasonably high initiative (I don't know if it's a bug or a feature – their stats have +2-3 to their initial initiative), and since various archers with 9 initiative often attacked the vampires first, I replaced them with riders, for example.

I bet you were even playing on "Impossible" difficulty?
No, I played the first one on hard difficulty. I played the rest just for fun, so I kept the standard difficulty.
