Or maybe former law enforcement officers who the bandits wouldn't mind getting revenge on? Bandits will get weapons anyway. Whether it's legal or not doesn't matter to them. Private citizens can only legally acquire them if they have the opportunity.

Military service should be based on contracts

Cowards and traitors.

Even though I served in the military myself, I don't agree. The army should be professional and based on contracts, not a bunch of cannon fodder recruited from the streets without combat training. The First Chechen War showed what such soldiers are worth. Fortunately, conclusions were drawn, and now only contract soldiers - professionals - are sent to hot spots, if anyone hasn't noticed.
