Okay, that's enough, I guess I went overboard. They are indeed the seven deadly sins, sculptures representing greed, which is obvious, and envy and anger, which is less obvious, as presented from the perspective of a character who doesn't understand art. However, the specific sins don't really matter. In my opinion, the first work, at least in two parts, dedicated to religious themes that comes to mind is the (Divine) Comedy by Dante (Alighieri). The second part, Purgatory, is dedicated, among other things, to the seven circles where repentant sinners serve their punishment. *Just don't read it; the work is valuable for historians, not as literature.* Another mention of the Divine Comedy appears together with the description of "Dead Souls," saying that Gogol used it as a basis.
