mages versus orcs

Please help, I was playing with my brother on the same computer. I was playing as the Academy: defense, light, darkness, education, wizardry, but I didn't have much luck with spells. Miniatures - all ranged units get initiative and attack, warriors get defense and health. Orc: defense, attack, leadership, darkness and chaos. Question: what did I do wrong????
