I'll keep that in mind. I usually see comments that the cover is specifically about them.

It seems that's because their version is the most well-known. I used to think they wrote it myself. Nina Simone is somewhat overlooked in this regard – many songs that she first performed are better known in other interpretations. For example, "Feeling Good."
And yes, check out Johnny Cash's version; it's amazing.
