I think that when a person starts to consider themselves a complete nobody/failure/useless/worthless, and looks at and evaluates themselves objectively, with a realistic perspective, then they have the opportunity to change for the better. It's like a step on the path to self-awareness, which you can then change and control.
Actually, this leads to the development of mental disorders. And considering that a mentally healthy person shouldn't have these problems in the first place, it can also exacerbate existing ones. Not to mention that such an assessment is rarely objective.
