Devices are simply too mundane, and they might not even work in other worlds if those worlds operate under different laws. Magical devices are even more so.

The problem here is that, just like in 1257 or Black Ice, you end up with a continuous storyline that you are forced to follow.

It's better to have a core storyline to build around, rather than relying on randomly generated content.
