I realized that the problem was with the terrible hosting, and now it's clear that the same thing happened in Windows, but there, Total Commander handled the exceptions itself and smoothly continued downloading the next files without any complaints or freezes! And I thought it was just quickly moving on to the next file when downloading a small one, and with a noticeable delay when downloading a large one. I didn't even think there were any problems! But it seems that I've written my own exception handler to reconnect to the server and continue the download, and I can move on now!!!
