Believe me, any reasonably competent commander, at a certain level of military technology development, would sit on a hill and, observing the battle, give orders to the troops. And that's not outrageous; it's just foolish to allow yourself to die from a random bullet/arrow (Napoleon, Kutuzov, for example; if either of them had died in the middle of the war for no reason, we would be living in a different world).
