How can I find out if the version is stable and working?

4.0 was tested by me and the members of the HotA team (usually, before the release, only I test it, because who else would?). The results of our tests are excellent (no crashes, no other glitches), otherwise, there would be no release.
For the first time in the last 2 years, I sat down to play Heroes properly and played OH for several days, having a ready version 4.0, before releasing it.

But, of course, I cannot guarantee 100% that everything is perfect. It is in your power to help make OH perfect.
