I also have problems with online games, but sometimes (now more and more often) I manage to play over the network. It's much better. You play for days, without rushing. On large and interesting maps.
By the way, I also only play on the maximum difficulty level on my computer. It's just not interesting on easy (you just walk around and bully the poor neutrals, and after a couple of weeks of leveling up, half of them just give up).
