Haven't played SM in a long time... well, now I have :)
As for the layout, both had plenty; the opponent got more from caches, while I got one-timers. But control was a disaster. In my 2.5 treasure zones there was no control at all, there was a DD in the ramp, but I was building a guild in Necro, whereas the opponent had wings in the underground, and the Dragon Utopia with the cap (and a TP scroll nearby) was located behind such detours that getting to it (for both me and the opponent) was only possible with control, so in perspective, I would have still lost here without control.
However, it didn't come to that; I attacked 147, believing that 14 Archangels were a serious argument, failing to consider that Kreg with a bunch of meat would beat them even under the course given equal stats. But the main fail was not knowing that having demons in the opponent's army would give him the ability to see quicksand even after the demons died (like with pegasi and mages, although this isn't mentioned in PhysMig). And in the end, Minotaurs and Ogres were still able to take down the Archangels even on a sanded battlefield (though the opponent already used teleport on the final blow). If I had traded off even one Archangel, the fun would have continued further - I would have taken the Book of Fire in my treasure zone, and then Mass Berserk and Armageddon with resistance artifacts - and who knows how that would have ended. Thanks for the game.
