How many Soviet republics were there?

Was that the norm, when you could be thrown in jail for a couple of words, and that happened in the restroom?

It did happen... but not throughout the entire history of the Soviet Union. The Thaw changed a lot, and in the 70s and 80s, everyone generally didn't care anymore. Of course, discussing problematic issues related to the government was not encouraged... but it can still be punished now.

And this is my opinion. I am proud that I was born in this country. That I managed to experience this era, even if only a little. Even if it wasn't the best time... And I am really very sad and hurt that such a great country fell apart. There was no other country like it, and probably there won't be again... It's silly to argue that there were only pros or only cons. There was everything, but for some reason, even with all its flaws, the USSR cannot be compared with modern Russia (even with all its advantages). It just doesn't work... And, to be honest, I am glad that I have the opportunity to study the history of this great country, to touch its part, even if only a little. The idea was grand, it's a pity that it didn't work out to implement it correctly...
