How many Soviet republics were there?

Or maybe it's better to believe in something positive than to know how bad things can be?
In general, people say different things, even though they lived in the same time period and in the same (or not?) country. If we look at statistical data, it turns out that the USSR had enormous potential. But if we consider the outcome, what were the reasons for the collapse of such a country? It's all just questions.
