How many Soviet republics were there?

I regret that the Soviet Union is gone. Name another country where the state provided an apartment, a dacha, a car, and a stable salary, no lower than the minimum wage. And you could believe in anything. My father told me that in Tashkent, no one even thought about driving believers out of mosques or firing them for their faith.
