We played on L, a good start, burst into the enemy's zone on turn 121, grabbing a Dragon Fly Hive and 2 Pandora's Boxes of 50 dwarves each... then running around boosting stats, took down a Dragon Utopia and found Angel Wings. Opponent seizes my capital while I, on my turn, cover his army there.

A wrong choice, didn't use the new game opportunity at the start. Despite having a Speed+2 hero, my army was weak and expansion was slow, while the opponent's starting army was very strong, developing quickly. The distance between us was too close; couldn't resist in the early game, economy and development were restricted. Though I struggled to get a Level 5 Hat, unfortunately the opponent also quickly obtained Wings, leaving no chance for a comeback!
