To be honest, I would take ALL the money from a dead character if I had the opportunity to do so safely and without harming my own character, especially if it was a large sum. And I would also take their items and sell them.
I would only not do this if I was specifically role-playing a character who would act that way. Seriously, would anyone else act differently and throw hundreds of thousands into the ocean? That at least harms the expedition, because with that money, you could buy weapons and successfully repel a pirate attack later on, thanks to it.
