Confirmed. The entire first week was wasted trying to take the second village... then another week to get it back and build up an army to take two consecutive castles. The third week was spent building an army. The only good thing I did was beat two pyramids without gaining any Wisdom experience (using Death Dealer first and Implosion second).

P.S. In general, I've learned one thing. If you see Inferno underground, restart the game and don't hesitate!
